SP: Who are Bah Samba ?

Originally in 1996 myself and two friends from Urubu (a traditional brasilian funk band) came up with the idea to mix dance music with more live latin elements, thus creating 'Carnival' my two friends surname initials were A & H (forming BAH) Nowadays, it's myself with a new group of friends, Alice Russell, Mark Ralph and Timmy Walker, however myself and Alice do most of the writing.

SP: How long have you been together as Bah Samba

Since 1996, but on and off doing different projects for various labels and bands, Bah Samba really came back together when i returned from Brasil in 2000, met up with Alice for a beer and decided to make the first album! This album only took 2 months to write and produce, but alot of people thought it took years??? clearly not, you only have to listen to it to realise this, i was not convinced by this album.

SP: How do you describe the Bah Samba sound

This album could be described as retro, only because we used instruments and recording equipment made before 1978.The original idea of Bah Samba was to mix 2 elements, dance and live, but now we concentrate more on a live organic feel, i think this shows in Bah Samba '4'.

SP: Your new album is titled Bah Samba 4, Why?

Simply because it is the fourth album! i don't think many people know this, because i recorded two other albums solely for the Japanese market. the other two were a mix selected and edited by Bah Samba and there was a Latin lounge compilation of outakes and remixes.

SP: Your new album is split in two with a uptempo oriented CD which one is closest to your hearts?

I love the downtempo latin cd, this was more natural to me and Alice, because we both fell in love at the same time , i think the songs reflect that and and with some of the lyrics verging on genius!!,.the uptempo cd is more of a groove.

SP: First single from the album Is the legendary Teena Marie track Portuguese Love In my review of the single I state that it sounds like Alice Russell have sung that particular song her whole life. Is it a favourite?

When i suggested doing this Alice said" i love that song' so your correct, she delivers the vocal with the same phrasing as Teena but still keeps the sound of Alice, i recently read a review of this single criticising Alice for staying too true to this phrasing, and stating the idea of a remake/cover is to interperetate in your own way which i can understand, but after all it is a melody.

SP: On Bah Samba 4 your teaming up with Bill Curtis and Johnny Flippen famous Fatback Band members how did that happen?

Our friend Byron told us that they were in London for a couple of days and on there way to Glastonbury to perform, Byron picked them up from The holiday Inn in Camden, plugged them in and we jammed about 5 tunes for 4 hours, i had the idea to use a horn line similar to that of 'let the drums speak' and due to legal reasons this has now officially become another cover, i didn't want to do 2 covers on the album but hey, at least this one is a complete interpretation, with the original members of the Fatback Band. Bill curtis sent me an email today asking if i wanted to remix a couple of tunes from the new 'Fatback Band' album. I think i shall!

SP: What are your expectations for the new album?

Hopefully to receive enough interest to get the opportunity to make another one! oh yeah also, go platinum , tour the world, and eat some nice food.

SP: Got any favourite tracks on the new album ?

    Morris and Calma.

SP: What are your plans in terms of touring?

We start at our launch party in Cargo London, with the full 10 piece band, drums , percussion, bass, guitar, 2 backing vocals, trumpet, flute , sax, piano, alice, then we plan to do Japan, Russia, Germany, Sweden, France, New york....plus uk festivals.

SP. Lastly will you do us your all time favourite album top 10 chart?

I can ,but i'd like to do my top 10 Brasilian albums so I hope that's ok.
